Health care increases are placing a financial burden on many American homes so the need for affordable health care has never been so great. Accountants in many companies have been told to cut expenditure and have used the rising cost of providing employee health care as a reason to cut back services. How do I know this, well because I am one of those people affected and despite a very good job, before 2006, the health care package at work was first rate. My employer called us into a meeting and announced that he was switching health care providers because it was too expensive.

They said that to have a low cost health care scheme for everyone meant we would have to change companies. I am told that the new insurance package is still very good and I am lucky to have it. It is not that I am against other workers getting a good deal but they are now taking twice the amount out of my salary so that my husband and daughter are covered. This means, that for my company to provide a health plan to all of the employees, it is no longer affordable for us.

To be honest, I got on well with the old provider but cannot see that happening here even if the health care plan is half decent. Many of us are not happy with the additional out of pocket expenses and less in our paychecks because of our employers pursuit of an affordable health care company. It makes more sense when you realize just how good the old policy was because I did not pay cent when I stayed in hospital 2 years ago giving birth to my daughter. Working out that same stay with the new plan would mean approximately 4,000 dollars would have to be paid by me.

There are also the co-pays to consider, another cost in addition to the hospital fees I would have to pay. There is obviously a market for these schemes because more and more affordable health care options are becoming available. Options now exist for people that are not supplied with a health provision where they work, and now single mothers have access to plans which they can join; some people can even have free health care. Whilst I appreciate these programs because they are saving lives and helping people to grow stronger and healthier, some people take advantage of them.

Those less well off are in need of these affordable health care schemes but they are also used by those who are intent on living of the state and do not actually contribute to society. We often forget who is ultimately paying for these schemes; us, the taxpayer. Financially speaking, my company saw the real advantage to this switch and some of the employees. All too often this happens where the only one that really benefits is the company, who seem quite happy that many of their employees will take home less. We have a responsibility here in America to providing some sort of affordable health care for those that need it most.
