General Tips For Pug Dog Health Problems

November 6th, 2008 by admin

One of today’s most popular dog breeds is the Pug and anyone who is thinking about adding one to their family should become familiar with the specifics of pug dog health care. Having been around for many thousands of years, the breed gained acceptance into the AKC’s Toy group in 1885. Although bugs come with a thick body and decent sized flat, wrinkly face, they have a proportionately tiny curly tail. Pugs typically weigh from 13 to 20 pounds and are usually 10 to 14 inches in height. Many of the things that make these dogs so cute are the very things that cause them so many health care problems, so extra care has to be taken.

Inspect the dog’s folds carefully for any sign of infection between them, as this is a common problem for Pugs and one that must be fixed by a vet. These skin infections are easy to prevent by regular washing, to remove any excess dirt between the folds.

The eyes are another major factor that causes Pug dog health problems. The eyes of the breed are frequently exposed to injury and other health problems because of the shape of the face. Look for any inflammation in the eye regularly and take the dog to the Vet immediately if you identify any problem in the surrounding area.

Dog Health

A common ailment among many of the Pug breed is eating more food than they need. Always watch your dog’s food intake and keep him at a healthy weight, as a negative weight can affect a dog as badly as it can a human. The tiny dog breed is very sensitive to heat and humidity, and should never be left outside without shade or locked in a car during summer. An overheated pug can have a hard time breathing, so make sure that you don’t leave him anywhere where he might be subjected to high heat for any length of time.

The key to good pug dog health is taking proper care of the dog and taking him to regular vet visits. These adorable little dogs will provide many years of happiness for the companions that take care of them responsible.
