Although perhaps not desirable, hair loss is quite normal. Men, women and children can all be affected and many millions worldwide are, but the list of reasons for this occurrence is very long. The correct term for hair loss is Alopecia. The most common type of hair loss is called male pattern baldness and is responsible for nearly 95 percent of cases in men; it is also hereditary.

Hair Loss

Some people only loss a small amount of hair and this is often down to a poor diet and is worth checking with you specialist. There are other reasons though, some of which you may know including: mental tension, stress, hormonal imbalance or perhaps an over exposure to chemicals or cosmetics. No matter what the reason, it is worth remembering that it is only if the hair follicles are damaged that can make the condition permanent. Surprisingly, women account for nearly 4 in every 10 sufferers in America today; so it is not, as commonly thought, a male problem.

Hair loss is in fact more common with women as they age but it is often caused by a thyroid problem. Globally, nearly 40 percent of women by age 60 will have experienced some form of the condition. Another period where women may suffer some hair loss that is not age related is during and after pregnancy. Approximately 30 million women in the United States experience female pattern, hereditary baldness.

A relatively new treatment is to surgically restore hair for sufferers of permanent hair loss. Simply put, it is the transplantation of healthy hair follicles from one area of the scalp to another. Now the most common hair transplant treatment for men, it is carried out as an out-patient basis under local anesthetic. It is now possible for women to have hair transplants like men and is becoming increasingly popular for those women keen to hide scars from previous facelift surgery.

It is important to try and keep your appearance as close as possible to your original when having hair transplant therapy and not try to look like someone else. Health considerations should be taken into account and addressed before hair transplant treatment is carried out on anyone. Even though hair restoration is a cosmetic procedure, aspects involved are different from other forms of cosmetic surgeries. New hair restoration techniques are being discovered all the time but if you have not found success then perhaps hair transplant therapy might be your only course of action for your hair loss.
